Working Group

RoHS and UV Lamps/LED

Call for Interest

Initially, UV lamps enjoyed an indefinite exemption for the use of mercury and other substances in discharge lamps under EU law (e.g. RoHS). However, with the introduction of ROHS II, many exemptions are limited in time.

To support members in addressing the challenges and opportunities related to the mercury/RoHS-compliant future of UV lamps, Advanced UV for Life has established a working group. Participation is open to all members, incl. manufacturers, integrators, and users of UV sources across all technologies.

Ziel | Objective

Supporting members in mastering the challenges and opportunities associated with the Hg/RoHS-compliant future of UV lamps.

The topics are determined by the participants themselves. The following possible topics can serve as a guide:

  • Legislation and Compliance: Current legal changes, impacts of RoHS for Hg-containing and Hg-free UV lamps, identification of needs for action (possibly application-related), possibly further legal compliances (REACH, ErP, WEEE), dealing with a worst-case scenario (expiry of exceptions).
  • Influence and RoHS Exception Applications: Representation of the interests of the members, support with exception applications, best-practice recommendations, chances of success.
  • Evaluation of Technological Alternatives: Hg-free, Hg-reduced, Excimer and UV-LED sources, market readiness, roadmap, requirements according to application fields (e.g., water disinfection, UV curing, UVA, UVB, UVC).
  • Requirements and Challenges for Excimer and UV-LEDs: Consequences for manufacturers and users of alternative technologies in the event of a premature end of the RoHS exceptions, market readiness, market expectations, trained work-force, supply chains, availability, manufacturer capacities, …
  • Legislation and Compliance of Alternatives such as Excimer and UV-LEDs: RoHS, REACH, ErP, WEEE, other requirements (also apply to non-Hg-containing products, other potentially toxic components?).
  • Environmental Management, Disposal, Replacement: Legal requirements for the disposal or replacement of Hg lamps – with or without the end of exceptions, responsibility manufacturer versus user.
  • Customs and Supply Chains: Requirements for customs/import/export documents to distinguish between prohibited and permitted Hg lamps, impacts of the Hg bans on availability, price and procurement of UV lamps (all technologies).
  • Strategy Development: Support in strategy development for continued use or transition to RoHS-compliant sources, adaptation and changes of business models.
  • Networking and Cooperation: Networking of members with experts, decision-makers and multipliers.
  • Public Image and Positioning: Communication in the tension field between the positive role of Hg-UV (e.g., drinking and wastewater purification) and environmental protection (renunciation of Hg), avoidance of “greenwashing”, positioning of Advanced UV for Life as a reliable, neutral source on the topic of UV and Hg (Hg-free), common public voice of all members.
